The work I am making now is about balance and the relationships of proportion that lead to symmetry. I believe that our universe is governed by an underlying mathematical foundation, through which we can discern pattern. My sculptures and the physical process of working with clay is an attempt to understand, capture and communicate the essence of those patterns.
I have been serious about studying ceramics, sculpture and art history for the past eight years. I have worked with several teachers including Larry Henderson, Andree Thompson, David Kuraoka and Susannah Israel. These people have each given me different approaches to art, taught me how to manage a ceramics studio, and helped me become a skilled ceramics professional. More importantly they encouraged me to improve my sense of form and design and to develop my sculpture from a foundation of ideas with a better understanding of art history.
Because of my wide-ranging background and skills—working in construction, ceramics and computers—I have found a unique synergy whereby each of my vocations reinforces ideas from one to the other. Building a house, designing a sculpture, or creating a computer network: each informs the next and these ideas drive me to create work that captures and reflects their combined parallels.
